Pastor C.E. Richardson — lovingly known as “Rev” — had a special place in his heart for young people. He championed every ministry and program designed to uplift and encourage them. Under his leadership, Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church faithfully celebrated its high school graduates each year, and the second Sunday in June became a cherished tradition known as Children’s Day and the Baccalaureate Service.
How the Scholarship Fund Began
After Pastor Richardson’s unexpected passing on November 24, 1995, his passion for youth ministry continued to inspire the congregation. Sis. Charlie Mae Luckey and First Lady Lee Ivory Richardson approached PastorElect James R. Spearman with a heartfelt idea: to honor Pastor Richardson’s impact by establishing a scholarship fund in his name.
Pastor Spearman embraced the vision, and in June 1996 — during the annual Children’s Day and Baccalaureate Service — the first C.E. Richardson Scholarship Fund recipients were recognized.
A Ministry of Support and Encouragement
What began as a tribute to a beloved pastor has grown into a meaningful ministry that supports Pilgrim Rest’s youth and young adults. The scholarship encourages students to pursue higher education while reminding them that their church family stands with them academically, spiritually, and personally.
Over time, the scholarship expanded from recognizing high school graduates to also supporting college students who remain active in the life of the church.
A Scholarship for Everyone
The C.E. Richardson Scholarship is intentionally noncompetitive. Every eligible student who meets the requirements receives support — a reflection of Pastor Richardson’s belief that all young people deserve encouragement.
Continuing the Vision
Today, the C.E. Richardson Scholarship Fund continues to honor Pastor Richardson’s legacy by investing in the next generation. Through this ministry, Pilgrim Rest affirms its commitment to education, spiritual growth, and the belief that our youth are worth every effort, every prayer, and every opportunity to succeed.
